GlamMa Time

Welcome to my venture into what it means to be a GlamMa.  It's not about Glamour so put away your Manolo's. On second thought....

Being a Glamma is a way of thinking. 

Most Glammas I know are looking to have new adventures now that their children are grown and have their own children.....our GlamBabies.  It's the "Now it's time for me" stage in our lives.  That cute convertible you always wanted to drive but couldn't because you were stuck with the SUV?  The trip to Italy with your friends? A random shopping trip to New York, with a few plays thrown in?  Now is the time in our lives when we can do all those things and also dote on our Grandchildren.  

 

 

Part of the fun of being a GlamMa is introducing our Grandchildren to the adventures we love and have time to take them on.  Mom and Dad are busy working and stressing out over the bills, we can visit Disneyland with our Glambabies just for the weekend.  Or how about a trip to Paris to ride the Eiffel Tower Carousel? I'm not a big cruise lover, but I'm told by my GlamMa girlfriends they are fabulous for the 'tween set. There's even a travel agency that specializes in organizing Grandparent/Grandchild adventures (www.grandtrvl.com)

GlamMas are all around us. An ongoing GlamMa project is articles. For many years I wrote a regular column for Pittsburgh Magazine detailing my humorous adventures (www.judithevansthomas.com) . I have a particular sense of humor about this time in life. I never use the word Age, ageing, growing older or other downer terms.  Yes there are practicle issues, but I'll leave that to the health and fitness authors. 

I've been on the road to Italy, China, the Hamptons, Montecito, San Francisco, Tucson, New Zealand and Australia.  I'm way behind in posting my videos and reports but hang in.  I'll catch up.  And if I can conquer the time monster, there will be fun books, television and other media venues. It's a new day for Grandparents. Our grandchilden are stuck at home...and often not with us! It's a time to be creative and reach out, zoom, facetime and talk on the phone with our Glambabies who don't understand how and why an invisible virus can upend everything we are used to. My Glamdaughters keep telling me how they miss me and want me to come visit. How do I tell them it isn't possible without scaring them? I've chosen to do lengthy zoom classes with them. We write poetry and analyze it, do silly song lyrics, and just gossip. It is not the same but it has helped. What do you do?

GlamMa Skiing Adventure

 "I can't do that" is no longer in my vocabulary since becoming a GlamMa.   It might be a dangerous decision but hey....somebody said we only live once.  Like Betty White...I am going out with a high kick. 

I used to ski.  I used to love to ski.  I used to have wonderful ski experience with friends and family.  Then the kids grew up and ski holidays with the parents became "lame".  So it had been a good ten years since I had donned my boots and Bogner one piece.   A scavenger hunt in the attic uncovered 1,000 dead stink bugs, 500 dead wasps and a plethora of "gently used" clothing ...size 4.  Who wore those???? Amid the rubble was my very stylish collection of ski clothing.   I loved my one piece Bogner.  Every picture taken with my children and husband on various ski trips was in the one piece.  I was looking forward to donning it again.       

I unfolded it gently remembering when Ross and Lauren learned to ski / snowboard.  The wonderful trips with friends to Mamouth Mountain in California with various children barfing in the backseat.  Vail vacations with 4 year old boys having fist fights under the dining room table.  New Year's Eve at a trendy Japanese restaurant in Aspen where every dish was just plain awful and the one Thanksgiving when Lauren had gone off with her husband to be and his family causeing Ross, Steve and I to escape to Aspen and a dinner where we were surrounded by families with no fewer than 30 members.   I vowed never again.  

So here we were again.  I smiled....actually giggled... at the prospect of starting a new tradition with Meg (now 4 1/2) and Julia ( 21 months) on the ski slopes.   But first, the outfit.  

After assuring that no stink bugs or spiders had created homes in the outfit I slipped one leg then another into the sleek black fabric.  Good so far.  Insert arms into the sleeves, pull up and zip.  Zip???  Zip???? What is happening at the waist????????? Why won't it zip?  Can't be. Won't accept. Zip harder. Suck it in.  SHIT!!!!

After assuring myself that it wasn't a zipper malfunction but rather a middle age waist malfunction I slipped my arms and legs out of the offending outfit that used to be my go to piece and tossed it aside.  How did this happen? Well, I'll tell you how it happened.  Too much food, too much wine and not enough exercise.  Aargh.   

I decided that GlamMa would be fine in two pieces as long as they were still red.  My choice, another Bogner, but this time I a jacket only with separate ski pants.   When I got the pictures later I was horrified to see I looked  like a sausage.  Not only was the jacket bulky, it was too long and outdated.  Nevermind, this trip wasn't about me, it was about being with the GlamBabies and their parents, my newly married son and his wife and of course Steve.  Plus it would be Steve's birthday on this trip. 

    Vanity has its place but not when you are fighting the elements.  None of us looked our best.

But we were together and that's a beautiful thing.

Ross Thomas - Steeltown Film Factory Contest Winner

After Months of competition the winners have been announced and the grand prize of $25,000 has been awarded to two very talented and different filmmakers....one of whom is ROSS THOMAS for his script, Anywhere But Here.   He will be directing and producing the movie this summer!!!!!!  The premier will be at The Three Rivers Film Festival in October 2010. 

 

   It started with filmmakers submitting their short scripts to a panel of Hollywood luminaries who have one thing in common...they were all brought up in Pittsburgh PA.   Odd you might say, but not really.   Pittsburgh has nurtured more creatives than most other cities.  See The Pittsburgh List.

So, In order to encourage these notables to come back to Pittsburgh and nurture production there, a wonderful screenwriter, producer, director and man of all seasons decided to do it first.  Carl Kurlander moved his family from a very lush Hollywood lifestyle to Pittsburgh, started teaching Film Studies at the University of Pittsburgh and founded, with Ellen Weiss Kander and Stephanie D'Engle the Steeltown Film Organization.  What has followed is nothing short of phenominal.  Carl wrote and produced My Tale of Two Cities, a movie recounting Carl's and Pittsburgh's comeback stories and birthed the Steeltown Film Factory

Film Ideas, Learn From Pros

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Everyone dreams about writing that big Hollywood movie, but now Pittsburghers are getting their chance thanks to the Steeltown FILM FACTORY. Aspiring filmmakers can win a $25,000 production prize by submitting a 10-12 page Pittsburgh-inspired screenplay and learning how the film business truly works from some of the top producers, directors, executives, editors, and actors working in film and television. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2009.

On November 7, 2009, the first panel discussion for the FILM FACTORY was held at Pittsburgh Filmmakers' Melwood Screening Room and was moderated by Steeltown's co-founder, Pitt professor and screenwriter Carl Kurlander ("St. Elmo's Fire," "My Tale of Two Cities"). Amidst Oscar buzz, panelist Geoffrey Fletcher, screenwriter for "Precious," gave an inspiring account of the many years he struggled before this breakthrough project and reminded the audience of how important it is to write from your own unique voice. This message was reinforced by fellow panelists including working Hollywood screenwriter Rob Lieber ("Septimus Heap: MAGYK"), who described selling his first screenplay out of his NYU college dorm and learning the ropes of being a studio writer; University of Pittsburgh alumna Lauren Elmer of Sony Pictures Classics Acquisitions, who gave the prospective screenwriters an idea of what studios look for in scripts; as well as local screenwriters Stephanie Lord (Academy Award winner of the Nicholl's Fellowship in Screenwriting) and Janyce Lapore, Action on Film International Film Festival's Best Screenplay award winner for "Screaming My Heart Out."

For the Steeltown FILM FACTORY, local students and aspiring filmmakers are asked to submit screenplays and take their shot at winning the $25,000 total prize package. The prize will be used to produce the selected one to three short films, with the funds being divided and awarded at the discretion of the judges. Applicants are required to submit a 10-12 page screenplay for consideration through the competition website at www.SteeltownFilmFactory.org by December 31, 2009. The winning film or films will be produced in the SWPA region during Summer 2010 and screened at the 2010 Three Rivers Film Festival.

The Steeltown FILM FACTORY seeks to connect talent in Southwestern Pennsylvania with entertainment professionals from LA, NY, and Pittsburgh. The competition will continue to grow as more advisors sign on and screenplays begin to come in. After submissions are received and reviewed by the judges, Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama students will perform staged readings of the ten (10) semi-finalist works on Saturday, January 30, 2010 during the FILM FACTORY'S next public event. This event, and others planned for February and March, offers the public, as well as the competitors, the opportunity to learn from entertainment professionals how to navigate the process of creating a well-received and commercially viable short film.

STEELTOWN ENTERTAINMENT PROJECT

"The Steeltown Entertainment Project connects entertainment professionals, with Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) ties, to projects, people and partnerships in order to support and invest in the socially and commercially significant film and media industry of the Pittsburgh region."

Steeltown accomplishes its mission by educating emerging talent through intensive mentoring experiences, and fostering economic development by nurturing and seeding entertainment projects that will provide employment and investment opportunities. By connecting local resources with filmmakers and agents active in the national film industry, Steeltown is helping to establish Southwestern Pennsylvania's entertainment economy. This economy will help to market the region in a unique and powerful way, attract and retain talent, and jump-start a dynamic industry that will ultimately provide a robust return on the region's investments.

Since its formation, Steeltown has recruited over 40 former Pittsburghers who are now successful filmmakers in New York and Los Angeles to serve as Steeltown advisors. Steeltown has endeavored to have them bring their film and television productions to the Pittsburgh region, and has, in collaboration with the student organization, Pitt-in-Hollywood, presented over 30 speakers from the entertainment industry at local events.

A BRIEF HISTORY   From Steeltown Film Factory

2003 - Steeltown produced the first ever Pittsburgh Entertainment Summit, which was held at WQED and the Andy Warhol Museum. Steeltown's advisors from the national film industry met with local civic leaders and the cultural community to discuss Hollywood's decision making processes in order to identify strategies to make this region more competitive for their film and television productions. Entertainment expatriates who participated in the Summit included Chicago director Rob Marshall, Jim Carrey's manager, Eric Gold, director Jamie Widdoes ("Two and a Half Men"), producer Bernie Goldmann ("300"), and television series creator Terri Minsky ("Lizzie McGuire"). The Summit included public events at WQED and the Andy Warhol Museum that were attended by more than 500 people from a diverse cross-section of the region.

Steeltown also worked with WQED/OnQ to co-produce a Mid-Atlantic Emmy-nominated one-hour television special, "Pittsburgh: Hollywood's Best Kept Secret," which allowed a wider audience to witness the dialogue that occurred at the Summit. It explored the region's rich cultural history and included interviews with the Summit's expatriate attendees, including producer John Wells ("E.R.") and actress Shirley Jones ("Oklahoma," "Carousel"). The Summit and the television special utilized the volunteer efforts of over thirty film students and local filmmakers.

2005 - With the help of producers Bernie Goldmann and George Romero, Steeltown hosted a premiere of Romero's "Land of the Dead," which sold out the Byham Theater and raised funds for the Steeltown Film Factory. The event attracted such prominent filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino ("Pulp Fiction," "Kill Bill") and Robert Rodriguez ("Sin City," "Spy Kids"), and was declared by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to be "as close to a love-fest as Pittsburgh gets without sports being involved."

2006 - Supported by special effects wizard and Steeltown adviser, Greg Nicotero ("Land of the Dead"), Steeltown attracted The Hatchery, an LA based entertainment company, to Pittsburgh to film best-selling author of "Goosebumps", R.L. Stine's "Don't Think About It." Steeltown raised over $900,000 for this project with one-third equity interest. The production, available on DVD, aired on Cartoon Network, resulted in over $2.16 million of spending in SWPA, employed 115 local residents, and used of support services such as catering, wardrobe, equipment rentals, hotels, and restaurants. To date, Steeltown has earned back over $250,000 from its partner with Universal Studios, California-based production company The Hatchery, making this a model of non-profit sustainability.

2007 - Steeltown brought New Castle native John Dellaverson, Chairman of Lionsgate Entertainment (Hollywood's premier independent studio), to Pennsylvania to meet with film students, government officials, foundations, and potential investors. Dellaverson, through Cinegate and Lionsgate ("Crash," "American Psycho"), had helped to spur growth in tax incentivized film productions in Canada, and New Mexico which lead to increases from $5 million to $450 million a year. He then helped to convince Governor Rendell to pass similar Film Industry Tax Incentive legislation in Pennsylvania, a measure that has had significant economic impact on the region. It has increased film related spending in SWPA to over $78 million since July 2007 and has contributed to the growth in jobs and ancillary services.

2008 - Steeltown partnered with Visit Pittsburgh & 1905 Productions for the premiere of "My Tale of Two Cities" produced by Steeltown's Carl Kurlander at the Sonoma Valley Film Festival. Its Pittsburgh premiere at the Byham Theater during Homecoming Week sold out, raising much-needed funds for Steeltown's Youth and Media Initiative and its pilot program at Holy Family Institute. It organized a fundraiser for the Pittsburgh premiere of "Bottle Shock" produced by Pittsburgh native Marc Lhormer, and partnered with Allegheny Conference on Community Development to celebrate "Pittsburgh 250."

2009 - Steeltown Entertainment Project and Pittsburgh Filmmakers began collaborating to launch the Steeltown Film Factory. As part of this collaboration, Pittsburgh Filmmakers will provide Steeltown with editing facilities, office space, library access, and screening rooms to further the goals of the Film Factory and premiere the Film factory as part of the 2009 Three Rivers Film Festival.

Beach Time

A week ago I was feeling sorry for myself that our trip to Naples had ended with 60 degree days and 40 degree nights.  The first three days of our week long post Christmas vacation had been beach perfect.  Meg, my Glambaby and her Mommy Lauren and Dad Patrick had reveled in the sunny weather and warm breezes off the Gulf of Mexico.   
 It's  amazing what a 2 and a half year old can do with a shovel and pail!   

 So much to think about too.

Meanwhile GlamMa Gigi could take only so much beach time before hitting the shopping area of Old Naples.  Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South proved to have some wonderful browsing in art, homewears, and clothing.

Costa Rica Rainforest Ziplining

    Part of the eco-adventure of being in Costa Rica is traveling high above the rain forest on a zip line. Our wonderful guide Carlos Alvirez from Swiss Travel Service

took us to a private ranch on the edge of the Rincon de la Vieja National Park which offered varied adventures including horseback riding, tubing down the Rio Negro River, volcano hiking and dipping in the Las Chorreras Waterfall.  I had told our group that zip lining would be my very first choice.  Despite the fact that I am afraid of heights, I wanted to see animals in their own habitat. 

Little did I know what that meant until I was harnessed up and lifted onto the zip line by a muscular young man who smiled a similar smile to the crocodile we had encountered along the river.

I am here to tell you that if there were any animals lurking in the trees I didn't see them. 

Number one reason:  Rain forest animals are smart enough to stay away from the camera- shooting-flash-popping-paparazzi tourists who go zipping in their habitat.  

The exception might be found in an advanced species of howler monkeys who are filming their own reality show called "  Dumb and Dumber zippers".  All their howling has less to do with mating than it has to do with hysterical laughter watching we humans fly upside down while pretending to be monkeys ourselves.

Number 2 Reason:  When you have entrusted your life to a group of guys who you have just met....and who harness you up to do these kinds of stunts.....you are too damn terrified to even look for wildlife.  And if any living animal were within earshot they would have been more terrified by my screaming as I dove headfirst above a raging river some 80 feet below.   

Can you just hear the guides mutter to each other...."This is a big one...hope the lines don't burst."  

In the picture below my guide is trying to assure me I would live.  What was I thinking????????????????

However, despite the terror, in the end I have to say it was one of my top adventures.   Now I am back to a safer form of transportation.

Costa Rica's Eco Wildlife

 Took a tour on the river today where we were floating like Humphrey Bogart and Kathryn Hepburn in "The African Queen.

Our captain knew the ins and outs of the habitat and river- thank heavens- because we saw more than one of these

I asked why he was smiling but got no satisfactory response.  I think he had his eye on me.  My  How many blonde GlamMas do they get in Costa Rica? 

My Cabin Mates were less than worried. 
Was it the Cerveza?

Along the way we encountered some beautiful birds, bats  ....well not beautiful but interesting....and a monkey or two.   These, unlike yesterday's , were not exhibiting their balls. Guess the weather is cooler which is the explanation I heard. 

If you look right in the middle of the tree you will see bats hanging upside down in a line.   It's like a brain game.  Can you see them?

The birds are gorgeous and we only saw a fraction of what is living in the rain forest. 

Here is a duck billed platypus bird?  Is this right?   Must look it up.  But the bird is a pale pink with a grand wingspan and very friendly. 

 

Of course most of what we saw were the reptiles....iguanas and ....iguanas. 

This guy is Tired!!!!!!   In this humidity I understand. 

Whoops ..this is a Crocodile, not an Iguana.   He is smiling too. 

Should I mention that small children are not a good addition to this trip?   

Okay back to the Iguanas.

Now a new species of creature found on the golf course.   They are retrieving balls. 

 

And of course the monkeys.   We saw Mama monkeys with their babies and teens just hanging around.  

Costa Rica Eco Adventures in the Rainforest

Days Two and Three of my Eco Adventure in the Northern part of Costa Rica have been nothing short of spectacular.  Our location on the Peninsula Papagayo is in the province of Guanacaste and differs from other parts of Costa Rica in that it experiences two distinct seasons: Gold and Green.   From November to May there is little rainfall. leaves fall off many of the trees and the landscape is known for its golden brown colors. 

The Four Seasons Resort Papagaya Four Seasons  located at the very tip of the peninsula on 2,300 acres has designed and painted its buildings in rich ochre colors to mirror the landscape.   Private residences on the Four Seasons and adjoining Exclusive Resorts properties  are designed to blend into the hillsides.  

But enough about architecture.  We are here to see the animals and swing like Tarzan and Jane through the rainforest.   Day two we took our guide Carlos Alvarez, and driver Eduardo  from Swiss Travel  (506)667-0606 to the Palo Verde National Park where we boarded a flat bottomed boat for a slow cruise down the river.

It was a lazy day on the river and the crocodiles and howler monkeys were all sleeping...that is until a few of the ladies took a short walk in the woods to find a spot to ...well you know....only to hear a hiss and crashing branches behind us as a crocodile was disturbed from his nap.  Have you ever tried sprinting with your pants around your knees?   Lucky for us the croc was just annoyed and not hungry.   Lesson learned.   Don't go on a hike with a full bladder.  LOL

The other inhabitants of the forest that day were seriously into napping .

And to get up close and personal we went into the Rainforest on a zipline. 

Welcome to Costa Rica

It's been a dream of mine to travel in tropical countries, but with the various problems hither and yon..other trips took precedence.  But finally, here I am with a great group of buddies, in Costa Rica.  The adventure is just beginning and here are the opening shots of what will be a week long trip. 

Our digs are part of the Exclusive Resorts properties on the Papagayo Peninsula near the Four Seasons Resort.  The house is on the top of a hill overlooking the Atlantic...quite spectacular. 

The local inhabitants...other than the scorpion I found walking down our stairs....are monkeys, iguanas, a dazzling array of birds and a few as yet unnamed creatures.  My favorites today.

Throwing a party for 70 of your nearest and dearest

Because the kitchen and patio renovation project from Hell ended last month (3 years of construction) my husband and I decided it was time to celebrate. The last big party we had given was the wedding for our daughter four years ago.  We enjoyed every second of it and I now know why...we had a party planner...Sheila Weiner who handled all the details.

After four years the amount of effort and angst  that goes into a party is forgotten and only the good memories remain.  Kind of like childbirth which is a good thing.  Otherwise we would be a nation of single children families.

Steve and I decided we would each pick a group for whom we would host a party and throw both parties in the same weekend.  One tent, one group of flower arrangements, one frantic week of cleaning the house and putting junk away. 

My passion is The Andy Warhol Museum. I serve on the Board and love all the members, events and most especially the museum director, Tom Sokolowski.   And since this is the Fifteenth Anniversary of the Museum's opening in Pittsburgh, The Museum is planning a "Fifteen Minutes of Fame"  Anniversary Bash in March.  To get everyone excited I volunteered to host the Inner Circle Members (a group that supports the Museum) and some of our fabulous friends for dinner. 

 

The weather co-operated, we had enough seats for everyone, Andy Warhol showed up as did the fabulous jewelry designer from New York City Jessica Kagan Cushman
who came with Eric Shiner, The Warhol Museum's Milton Fine Curator of Art.

The folks who came were treated to a retro dinner of home style comfort food.  Mashed potatoes with gravy....the thick kind, meatloaf, jello mold salad and specialty martinis.  The Andy was hot a spicy, the Marilyn soft and breezy and the Mao was whatever you decided it to be.
